Katherine Houghton Hepburn, born on May 12th, 1907
"despite whatever I may have said earlier",
is regarded as one of the most respected actresses
of her generation ... even though she was labeled
by Hollywood in the late 1930s as "box office poison".
Hepburn, who says shes "revered rather like an
old building,"
always makes the lists of the worlds most admired women.
Her career spans more than six decades, and she is the only
actor or actress to be nominated for 12 Academy Awards,
and the only woman to win four as Best Actress
three of them after the age of sixty.
She was raised in a very wealthy family,
as the tomboy daughter of a surgeon and a suffragette.
Her mother raised Katherine to be outspoken
and to fully develop her mind.
She was also taught to stretch her abilities to their limits.
She arrived in Hollywood in 1932
sporting slacks and a Bryn Mawr accent.
Her debut opposite John Barrymore
in "A Bill of Divorcement" was an instant success.
Her third picture, "Morning Glory", earned her an Oscar,
and her fourth, "Little Women", was another enormous hit.
In 1942, she made the movie "Woman of the Year"
starring opposite actor Spencer Tracy.
This was the first of ten movies they made together
and this was also the beginning of their love affair
which lasted twenty five years.
Spencer Tracy never divorced his wife,
but later on did move in with Miss Hepburn.
They were together until his death.
She has won four academy awards over a distinguished career.
