Television and movie star Steve McQueen
was the sexiest and toughest leading man of his day.
He was the personification of "cool"
and built his considerable reputation
around a macho, loner image.
McQueen played the part of bounty hunter,
Josh Randall, in the classic TV series,
Wanted: Dead or Alive, that ran from 1958-1961.
He was one of the first television stars
to make the leap to major movie star status.
Among his most memorable films were,
The Magnificent Seven (1960),
The Great Escape (1963),
The Cincinnati Kid (1965),
The Sand Pebbles (1966),
Bullitt (1968),
and Papillon (1973).
Steve McQueen did indeed define what being "cool"
was.
And although imitated by many, nobody comes close.
"I live for myself and I answer to nobody".
He died at the age of 50 on November 7, 1980 from
lung cancer.
I guess he finally answered to somebody.
