Who will save the
tiger.
The enormous destruction of wild places within the past hundred
years, has
lead to the extinction of three subspecies, and the
world's population of wild
tigers has declined to only slightly
more than five thousand.
Signs of the tiger's threatened existence were known for some
time, but
ignored. Although a few tiger reserves had been set up
in the 1930's, it was
not until the 1970's, in response to worldwide
alarm over the bleak prospects
for the tiger's survival, that drastic
action was taken.
Despite all odds, the number of tigers are growing.
The fight for
the tiger's survival grows stronger as more people learn the
story of it's treatment by humans, as well as the fascinating natural
history
of the animal itself.
Thank goodness, because a world without tigers would be a poor
place
indeed. |
